Gingival recession – causes and surgical treatment
Gingival recession is a non-inflammatory condition in which the gum decreases in volume and moves toward the tooth root, resulting in root exposure.
This problem is not just aesthetic. Root exposure causes:
- Increased sensitivity to hot and cold
- High risk of caries development on the root surface
- Color change (Discoloration)
- Gradual damage to the tooth structure
- In some cases – reduction of stability
The exposure of roots during a smile causes discomfort and decreased self-confidence in many patients.
Recession treatment is carried out surgically. The procedure may include:
Coronally advancing (pulling down) the raised gum
Grafting tissue from the palate
Combined techniques depending on the specific clinical situation
The surgery is particularly predictable in cases of Class I and II recessions, where the success rate is maximally high. The earlier the plastic surgery is performed, the better and more stable the operative result.
